The Literacy Outreach Initiative (LOI) is designed to improve the issue of literacy in the Charleston community through partnerships with the Honors College at the College of Charleston, Charleston County School District, the City of Charleston, and other literacy-oriented community organizations. LOI currently works in 7 Title I elementary schools concentrated in downtown Charleston and North Charleston.
College of Charleston students are trained alongside classroom teachers both to act as mentors to elementary school children and to help deliver an innovative literacy-intensive curriculum. While in the classroom the college students also share their love of literacy and their collegiate experience. LOI culminates its program by inviting the elementary school children to the College of Charleston campus to participate in curricular activities and imagine their lives as college students.
