Program History

In response to 2010 data indicating that 12.9% of its entering 9th graders read at or below a 4th grade level, the Charleston County School District elevated literacy to its highest priority. The Honors College designed the Literacy Outreach Initiative (LOI) to address this issue by mobilizing Honors College students in support of literacy-building efforts in Charleston. Since the LOI's inception in Fall 2010, approximately 800 Honors College students have worked with 2,000 members of the community and contributed more than 6,000 hours of service through their LOI placements in local schools and community organizations.

The LOI is thankful to its generous donors and grantors for their continued support of the program. Please contact us at LOI@cofc.edu to learn more about sponsorship opportunities.
